Let’s Chill…Artistically

If you are reading this post, then it is likely that you are an artist..welcome :) I am QUILLA. A fellow independent artist!

Thank you for taking time out of your day to read our blogs and to discover other artists you may have never heard of yet.

The industry of all arts is very tough to live in. It is both mentally and physically demanding as well as thrilling and exciting. So I invite you to use this space here to take a break from the fast-paced industry life and to just be you. The you that created this journey, the you that encourages you to carry on. Let’s strip back all the high expectations and the difficult goals that you aim to reach and just sit with yourself as the artist. Reflect with yourself and your creative journey so far…no matter how far you came or if you just started…

I have prepared some reflective questions for you..feel free to use them or to use your own:

~What have I completed so far in my creative journey?

~What is the next realistic goal from where I am?

~What are the creative qualities that I love about myself and what do I need to work on?

~Have I shown up for myself in times when my path seemed impossible?

~Have I finished my projects to my own satisfaction?

I would personally recommend asking yourself about the last 2 questions as it is much more common than you think for an artist to de-centre themselves throughout their creative journey. The industry is very open and very collaborative once you get into it and there will be times where a lot of people have their say on what YOU should do and how YOU should shape out your projects. You have to keep a level-head to shake off other people’s expectation of you and move at your own pace.

Take your time..

You have probably heard the term, “You cannot rush greatness” and I found that out to be true. I am an independent artist filled with endless creativity and thoughts when it comes to projects. I would mentally schedule finish lines for my projects without even starting it, not being aware of realistic circumstances. I had to learn how to match my creative pace to fully succeed. This brings me onto my next point..

Be Humble..

Your project is the most exciting thing in life rn. The time period when you feel the most ALIVE and ELECTRIC! It is super easy to figure out and plan your project perfectly in your head but you must be humble with reality. If you are an upcoming artist, there are obstructions along your path like costs to hire your ideal set, the props or set design, to hire a camera and assistance (people who’d help you film) anddd a lot more. These natural circumstances can delay/alter your project but I find these to be somewhat helpful in conjuring raw creativity. Having to find ways around the theme you are trying to portray, births the urge to use what you have to creatively display your inner vision.

Every time you have an obstacle, use it as an opportunity to detail your art further!

When releasing your art onto social media, do it without looking backwards. Be confident in what you have made and dont let any negative comments destruct your self-worth and the worth that you put into that project. I know this is a common point but it is very easy to slip into self-destruction. People may have something to say but that is the point. You have put your most sacred piece of you out for the gain and perspective of the world to perceive. Stay true to yourself and do not constantly change yourself and your artistry for the likes of other people. They are not you.

LASTLY BUT IMPORTANTLY..

I found it difficult to not compare myself to other counterparts artistically because I envision myself to achieve those same goals…that would be the end of my creative journey as I would no longer be myself, but a desperate extension of another artist. Everyone’s journey is unique to their own…it is completely advisable that you seek like-minded companions and get inspired from artists who are further along in their journey but have the self control to settle with your own pace and style.

So take a pause, take a breath, retrace your plan, work on yourself and maximise your creative qualities. Life will not be over and no, you will not be left out if you take a break. It is healthier to take longer to complete your project than to rush through stress and end up with a mediocre project. Be YOU!

Happy reading!

I don’t feel like I need to preach to the world or nothing like that. I just feel like I share what I say, and if listeners get it, they get it. And I never underestimate the audience’s ability to feel me.
